NEW this year ~ Wicked Northern New York and Murder & Mayhem in Jefferson County
Check out ALPHABET KILLER, my other website devoted to my book, Alphabet Killer: The True Story of the Double Initial Murders. This is the only book entirely devoted to Rochester’s unsolved ‘Double Initial’ or ‘Alphabet’ Murders. It provides a comprehensive, accurate overview of the heartbreaking slayings of three little girls that have confounded authorities for forty years. I will be signing copies of this and my other titles at Bear’s Den Gift Shop in Akwesasne on Sunday, November 27 from 1-3 p.m.
SAMPLE CHAPTER from “WICKED”: “The Girl Who Was Traded for Chickens”
Late one chilly afternoon in November 1908, a young girl—barefoot, filthy, and scantily dressed—showed up at the Lavalley residence in Cadyville seeking shelter. She said her name was Annie and that her parents, Abraham and Mary Terrier of Schuyler Falls, had “put her out.” How do you kick a ten-year-old child out? From the condition of the girl, the eviction from her so-called home was apparently a blessing in disguise. One glance at their diminutive visitor, and the Lavalleys knew that Humane Officer Hennessy was needed. While modern humane officers specialize in animal cruelty, in the early 1900s, it was, as one paper called it, the “noble work of preventing cruelty to [both] children and animals.” It was the humane officer’s job to enforce anti-cruelty laws within his jurisdiction. In those days, there were no government agencies to oversee the welfare of children, so Hennessy acted as a forerunner of today’s caseworker for the New York State Department of Social Services - Child Protective Services division. He had undoubtedly seen his share of shocking situations, due to the nature of his work, but this was one case he would never forget.
Hennessy questioned the child and the neighbors of her previous caretakers but was unable to speak with her real parents, because her biological father had left several years earlier, after an argument with her real mother. Then, shortly thereafter, Annie’s mother died, and Annie became an orphan—and a vulnerable target for predators, such as (in her case) gypsies, pimps, and child abusers, in that order. Thus, the girl’s actual name, the Humane Officer soon learned, was Annie Ashline of Keeseville, not Annie Terrier of Schuyler Falls. She had somehow fallen in with a band of gypsies passing through the area at the time of her mother’s death; and, although they provided the basic necessities for the short time that she was with them, they did her no favors. In fact, they did the unthinkable, selling her to a “man of alleged ill repute near Redford” for fifty cents—fifty cents—the equivalent of twelve dollars today. When he was finished with her, he took her to the Terrier home and traded her for a half dozen chickens. So far, the only society she knew had been cruel to her, placing her value at next to nothing; and things were about to get worse for her.
While in the care of the Terriers, neighbors told Hennessy that the child was regularly beaten, which they called “flogging” back then, provided with but little clothing, and sent through the snow to the woods, barefooted, to fetch wood for the family. The Ticonderoga Sentinel of December 3, 1908, said she had been “buffeted from pillar to post and [had] been frightfully abused,” until the day the Terriers kicked her out, and the Lavalleys contacted Humane Officer Hennessy on the girl’s behalf. Annie was committed to the St. Vincent’s orphan asylum in Troy. The Sentinel said that at least the investigation “resulted in putting the unfortunate waif in a place where she will receive the care and education which has thus far in her life been lacking.”
Warrants were then issued for the arrest of both Mr. and Mrs. Terrier, “on a charge of endangering the morals of the child, under section 289,”according to the Press Republican. Mary Terrier was “under $100 bail, to appear before Justice Emery,” and Abraham Terrier, while he could not initially be found, did manage to show up in time for his and his wife’s arraignment a few days later. Incredibly, Justice R. H. Emery released the contemptible couple, saying the charge brought against them by Humane Officer Hennessy was lacking in evidence to support it. They were free to go.
Perhaps if the good justice had walked a mile in the child’s shoes, he might have reached a different conclusion. But he hadn’t been subjected to the deeds of a man of ill repute against a frail little body; he hadn’t felt the familiar sting of a whip or been chained to a porch like a dog; and he hadn’t experienced the shame of being sold for a mere fifty cents before being traded for six lousy chickens. If none of that is endangering a child’s morals, then what is?

I just got through watching the Alphabet Murders. Very good movie and I love the actress who portrayed Megan Paige. She did a great job! I was wondering what has happened to Megan. Is she better?
Hi, Mary. Yes, Megan did a great job acting, but her character was not based on a real-life investigator. Her role was entirely fictional. The movie is only loosely based on the actual story. Thanks for writing.
Cheri
i was 8 years old when the murders happened and went to church with carmen ,was wondering if bible verses had anything to do with the case?
Hi, Donna. I’m not sure about Bible verses, but you’re not the first to wonder about it. Of all the girls, only Carmen was a regular church-goer, and the three victims belonged to different parishes. They were all Catholic and all within the Rochester Diocese, but that’s all that they had in common as far as religion goes. Because of the abundance of threes in relation to the Double Initial murders (three victims, Route 33, School 33, etc. etc.), some wonder about Biblical symbolism with regard to the number (the Holy Trinity, triad, etc.), but that’s beyond my area of expertise. A link I found while researching broke down the symbolism in detail here: http://www.greatdreams.com/three/three.htm. Thank you for writing.
Hi Cheri,
I was wondering if you ever went to the authorities with the question I asked last month about the man who ran the gas station on Avenue E? The last time I spoke to Tom Crowley was on 10-20-08, I never heard back from him & later found out he passed away. He had to have some kind of notes or something from our conversation?
Yes, I passed your questions and comments on to Tom Crowley, the lead investigator of the case for the NYS Police (who is still alive and well).
Also, on my Alphabet website, the page, “If You Have Information,” lists the phone numbers of the various agencies you should call, if you have any information regarding the case. Thanks.
Hi Cheri! How are you? I wanted to show someone the pictures of the Massena Center cemetary (civil war soldier) and can’t find them anymore. Are they posted? Thanks, Ruthann
Hi, Ruthann. I don’t think they are posted anywhere online anymore, and I no longer have digital copies of them or the originals…that website has long been defunct (hauntedny.com). If you have a copy of my first book (Haunted Northern New York – 2002), I think that’s where the pictures you’re referring to are. Sorry I’m not much help. The Massena Center pics were taken by Chris Sharlow. Best regards. Cheri
Ok so please tell me this, these murders are still unsolved and the only person of interest that is still alive has not yet been cleared or even found guilty with the use of DNA evidence. But yet they exhumed a dead body to clear that man. And another thing if Kenneth Bianchi wants to be cleared so bad why doesn’t he offer his own DNA seriously. And I apologize if he has been but I am unable to find those facts anywhere on the internet.
Thank you for writing, Maria. Because these are open, active investigations, there is much information that cannot be disclosed to the public without compromising the integrity of the investigation. What I can say (since it has already been said publicly) is that Ken Bianchi’s wrist print was provided in the 1980s to compare to the wrist print found on Michelle Maenza’s neck, and he was also cleared by serological studies in the death of Wanda Walkowicz. So he has been exonerated by DNA studies in Wanda’s death only. There is not sufficient DNA evidence from the other two murders to compare his (or any suspect’s) DNA to. I’ve described this in the book and provided the sources of that information at the end of the book. Authorities no longer have all of the evidence originally found at the three crime scenes, since this is a very old case, and DNA testing was unheard of at the time of the murders. But they do have other undisclosed, damning evidence that would be sufficient to incriminate someone, with or without DNA confirmation.
Hey Cheri, I just discovered your book about the Alphabet Killer and it sounds very interesting. I would like to read it but I think my English might be not good enough, so I have a question: Is the book going to be translated into German?
Greetings from Germany
Julia
Hi, Julia. Thanks for the note. I don’t believe “Alphabet Killer” will be translated, but I’ll double-check with the publisher on that. It’s their call and would depend, I imagine, on whether the amount of foreign interest would support their investment in translating the title. I hope you get to read it one day, though. Best regards.
Cheri, I can’t wait until this book comes out next week, I will be waiting by the register to buy it. I was in your book Still More Haunted New York, we are the “Don’t Make Us Leave” home. So glad to see your still writing these books, you tell the stories beautifully. Thanks again for sharing with us.
Hi, Robyn! Thank you for your kinds words. It seems like “Still More” was so long ago. (Thank God the publisher didn’t decide to call this one, “Even STILL More”!) Haha. I don’t know what day the bookstores will actually receive their first batches, but I know for certain the book will be there by my first signing for it on the 23rd. If you look for it before then, just call the store first before you go. Take care.
Dear Cheri, I read about your book about the alphabet killings in the Irondequoit Post but wasn’t able to attend your book signing. This case has upset me for years too and when the movie came out it brought it all back. I am also a writer of several things including the genre of which you write about. I am also touched by some connection abilities with the spirit world and I can tell you for a fact the killer behind these girls’ death had to do with forces from other places and was demonic in nature. In other words it was very evil.
Hi, Charlie. Thanks for writing. That’s one thing I think everyone can agree on is that the person or persons who did this were evil. I’ll be back in the Rochester area the weekend of November 20 for more signings. They’ll be posted on my website shortly.

Cheri-
Re: Alphabet Killer. Having grown up in the Rochester area, specifically West Webster and graduating from High school in 1971; I was particularly interested in reading The True Story of the Double Initial Murders. You did not dissappoint me, a good read thank you. So many questions yet to be answered.
Jan Zabelny
Thank you, Jan. I appreciate the kind words. I know….there are a lot of unanswered questions; but I’m confident they will be answered one day. Take care.
Cheri
Cheri,
I’m looking forward to your new book! Please set aside a signed copy for me. Life is still a bit crazy around the Spicer Home. Our “friends” are still VERY active.
The second printing of Saviors Among Us: Situation Critical (aka Saviors Among Us 1.0: Situation Critical – Limited Edition) will be released in September. It will be sealed in a comic bag with a comic backer board and will come with a slew of surprises inside… including an exclusive CD Single! The number of books for sale will be limited (hence the “Limited Edition” part of the title). A Special Edition will be on sale on Amazon.com by the end of October and will feature a download of the CD Single.
This is fun. Thank you for all of your support, advice, and encouragement. You are awesome!
-Marc Spicer
Hi, Marc! Good to hear from you. I’m glad you’re enjoying yourself with Saviors. It sure sounds like you’re doing well with it.
The story about your house is in Volume 4 of Haunted Northern New York that comes out this fall. It’s the same story that was in Weird, only with a few changes. It’s been so long since I finished writing Vol. 4 that I can’t remember if I told you that or not! At any rate, that book comes out in mid-October this year (not mid-October last year, which I thought it was going to).
Thanks for your kind words. Keep in touch!
